Finland is a state in Northern Europe, its capital is Helsinki. the country has land borders with Sweden to the northwest, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east.  Most of the population is concentrated in the Southern parts of the country in the biggest cities such as Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku. Finland is ranked as one of the top 5 countries in the world with the highest standards of living. Country’s calling code is 358 and the local time difference with Turkey is 0.

The average monthly living expenses for a student in Finland are approximately 700-900€. This may vary a bit, depending on your study location in Finland.

How to apply

There are only a few programmes in English as universities’ and universities of applied sciences’ (UAS)  degree programmes are mainly conducted in Finnish and Swedish.

Eligibility to apply for Bachelor’s degree programmes in UAS depends on having completed at least one of the following:

•             the Finnish matriculation examination

•             completed upper secondary school

•             vocational qualifications of three years or more in duration

•             the International Baccalaureate

•             European Baccalaureate

•             Reifeprüfung

•             a foreign qualification which provides eligibility for higher education in the awarding country.

Student selection is usually based either on grades, an entrance exam, or both.

Bachelor’s level studies in universities

In most cases, you are eligible to apply to Bachelor level studies in Finland if you are eligible to apply for higher education in your home country.

Eligibility to apply to a Bachelor’s degree programmes at a university depends on having completed at least one of the following:

•             the Finnish matriculation examination is taken at the end of the general upper secondary school

•             vocational qualifications of three years or more in duration

•             the International Baccalaureate

•             European Baccalaureate

•             Reifeprüfung

•             a foreign qualification which provides equivalent eligibility for higher education in the awarding country.

Student selection is usually based either on grades, an entrance exam, or both.

How to apply for university of applied sciences (UAS) and universities

You can apply for UASes’ Master’s level degree programmes provided in English in the joint application and separate applications. When applying in separate applications, you need to fill a separate application form for each programme.

In order to be eligible to apply for a UAS Master’s level degree programme, you must have completed a Bachelor’s level degree or other higher education degree and have a minimum of three years of work experience.

In certain fields, that is Hands and Craft, Communications and Fine Arts, Theatre, and Dance and Music, the work experience can be replaced with artistic activities and merits.

In order to be eligible to apply for a Master’s level degree programme in a university, you must have completed a Bachelor’s degree from a university or a UAS Bachelor’s degree.

Language Requirements

•             Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), level C; or

•             Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), CEFR level C1; or

•             Pearson Test of English, Academic 51; or

•             IELTS, academic level 6.0; or

•             TOEFL 550 paper-based test/TOEFL 79 Internet-based test

Tuition fees and scholarships

From the beginning of the academic year starting autumn 2017 and onwards, non-EU/EEA students in Finland are subject to tuition fees in English-taught Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. The annual fees will approximately vary between 8.000€ and 25.000€.
